A-Sock-Ellipse Now! Help FAQ
I'm having general problems running the full version of "The Magic Land", or I'm getting "Runtime" errors.
There is a patch available on the developer's website Digital Awakening.
The undead on level 5 of The Secret of Coolness are too scary!
Download this file and copy it into the "Data\entity\" subfolder in your The Secret of Cooness folder (for example "C:\TSOC\Data\entity"). Replace the file that's already there. This will change the undead into slow robots.
We can get Magic Land to the point at which it asks if you want to install icons to the desktop. When we hit yes, it locks up. When hit no, we can't find out how to run the program.
Select "NO" when asked to add icons, then open your "Start Menu", choose "Run", in the Run window input "C:\TML\TML.exe" and choose "OK". This will run the game. To add a shortcut to your desktop, right-click on your desktop, choose "New" then "Shortcut", then enter "C:\TML\TML.exe" as the location and "The Magic Land" as the name of the shortcut. This is assuming C:\TML is the directory where you installed the game.
How do I defeat Magico?
Magico is very hard to defeat, he's probably the second toughest Nasty Lord after Pacula. The key to his defeat is to concentrate all of your attacks on one enemy at a time, and don't attack Magico himself until the very end. I don't remember, but I think I took out all the swords first, then wands, then Magico, but it may have been wands, swords, magico. Make sure to have every character fully loaded on bread (and maybe some chocolate) and eat them during the battle so none of your characters die. Maxing your stats helps too, because if they're too low then you can't even hit the things. I recommend you're level 29 at least for defeating Magico, and that's only if you put about 1/3 of your points into initiative (green arrow). That's really the most beneficial skill at higher levels, since it lets you attack 2-3 times in the time that the enemy can only attack once.
Are there cheat codes in "The Magic Land"?
No.
Any more strategy hints for getting through the middle of "The Magic Land"?
go to the inn and spend the night, then go back to the trails and fight a few battles to gain gold and experience. Once you've gained enough experience to level-up, press C on your keyboard to alter your party's stats, see the TML help file for more information. Then go to the item shop to buy items to use both during and between battles. Finaly press X on your keyboard to access your inventory and move items to characters. Remember, only items in a characters individual inventory can be used in battle.
In "The Secret of Coolness" objects appear and flash at the beginning of level 6.
Try lowering the graphics settings for the game. These are the settings before the game starts. Also try hitting ESC in case it's a movie that's causing problems - ESC will skip the movie.
The movies in "The Secret of Coolness" crash or do not work.
The movies are DivX compressed which means that you need a DivX player installed to view them. You can download one for free here.
Where do I get DirectX 8.1 for older versions of Windows?
You can't get DirectX 8.1 for Windows 95. For Windows 98 or Windows ME you can download it here. You can also get DirectX by running Windows Update. To do this go into Internet Explorer and select Tools -> Windows Update. Or go to any download website and do a search for "DirectX".
After installing "The Magic Land" and going over the manual, I tried to start up a game. Only, in the start menu I am not able to select "new player"--it is not even highlighted as an option. What's the deal?
